Lawton Glenn Lee was born in Du Pont, Georgia, March 3, 1908. After graduating from high school in Homerville, Georgia, he attended and graduated from the Struby School of Pharmacy in Atlanta. He worked as a pharmacist in several stores before buying his own store in Quitman, Georgia, in the 1930's. A popular druggist, he was often referred to as Dr. Lee. The store is still in business on the same corner under the name Lee-Pickles Drugstore.
Grace Paulk was born in Ocilla, Georgia, July 24,1913. After graduating
from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia, she began
her teaching career in Homerville where she and Lawton met. They were
married in 1938 and moved to Quitman.
Lawton and Grace were faithful
members of the First Baptist Church in Quitman. Lawton served as a deacon
for many years. Grace played the piano for her Sunday School class, was
director of Vacation Bible School, delivered Home Life magazines to
shut-ins, and taught a Bible study group which still bears her name. They
both served on the building committee when the church built a new
sanctuary in 1960.
Lawton inherited property in
Valdosta from his father, Robert Edward Lee. Mr.Lee was a prominent
citizen in south Georgia, serving several terms as a state representative.
Part of this property, which
Lawton's father lived on for a brief period, is now occupied by Crossing
Jordan Baptist Church.
